Technology fee is a mandatory institutional charge that supports technology infrastructure, learning-management systems, software licenses, or student technology services.
How it works
The institution sets the fee amount and publishes it in the fee schedule. At registration the fee is posted to the student’s account along with tuition. Aid is applied to the total charges. Revenue is used for LMS licensing, help-desk support, software, or network infrastructure. Students see the fee on the billing statement and in consumer-information disclosures.
Example: an online university charges a $150 technology fee each term. A full-time student is billed the fee along with $4,000 tuition. The student’s Pell Grant and loans cover both charges. The fee appears as a separate line on the invoice and is included in the published cost of attendance.
How it differs
Tuition is the charge for instruction. A lab or course fee is tied to a specific class. Inclusive-access charges pay for course materials. A technology fee is a general mandatory fee supporting institutional technology services.
Common errors
Omitting the technology fee from net-price or COA disclosures. Treating an optional software purchase as a mandatory technology fee. Assuming online students are exempt from a general technology fee.
