Glossary/Inclusive access

Inclusive access

Inclusive access is a pricing model in which required digital course materials are provided to every enrolled student on or before the first day of class, usually at a negotiated lower rate, and the cost is charged to the student’s account.

How it works

The institution contracts with publishers for a discounted digital-content rate. Upon registration, students are automatically enrolled in the materials and the fee is posted to their accounts. An opt-out window is provided. Students who do not opt out receive access through the learning-management system on the first day. Aid is applied to the charge along with tuition. Opted-out students are responsible for securing materials independently and the fee is removed.

Example: an online chemistry course uses inclusive access. Every student is charged $75 for the digital textbook and homework platform. A student who already owns a valid access code opts out within the first week and the $75 is reversed. Other students’ aid covers the charge.

How it differs

A traditional bookstore purchase is optional and paid out of pocket or with a book voucher. Open educational resources are free and openly licensed. Inclusive access is an opt-out, institution-billed model. A book voucher is an advance of aid, not a pricing arrangement.

Common errors

Missing the opt-out deadline and being charged for unwanted materials. Assuming inclusive-access materials are always cheaper than used or rental options. Failing to include the fee in consumer-information cost disclosures.
