Glossary/Distance-education fee

Distance-education fee

Distance-education fee is a charge assessed specifically for enrollment in online or distance-education courses or programs.

How it works

The catalog or fee schedule lists the distance-education fee and the courses or programs to which it applies. At registration the fee is added to the student’s account. Aid packaging uses a COA that includes the fee. Billing statements show it as a separate line. Institutions disclose the fee in net-price calculators and consumer-information pages so prospective students can estimate total cost.

Example: an institution charges standard tuition plus a $50 per-credit distance-education fee. A student taking 12 online credits is billed an additional $600. The $600 is included in the student’s cost of attendance and is covered by the aid package along with tuition.

How it differs

A general technology fee applies to all students. A proctoring fee may be charged per exam. A distance-education fee is specifically tied to online delivery. Some institutions embed online costs in a single tuition rate and do not list a separate fee.

Common errors

Comparing base tuition across institutions while ignoring distance-education fees. Assuming the fee is optional. Failing to include it in the COA used for aid packaging, which can create an artificial gap.
