Coursera quickly became the largest of the early MOOC platforms by number of university partners and enrollments. It later expanded into full online degrees offered in partnership with universities and into enterprise subscriptions. The company went public in 2021. It remains a major channel through which traditional universities reach non-degree and degree-seeking learners outside their campuses.

Coursera established the dominant commercial model for university-partnered open courses and later demonstrated that MOOC platforms could host credit-bearing degrees.
