Glossary/Prior learning assessment

Prior learning assessment

Prior learning assessment is the evaluation of knowledge and skills acquired outside the classroom-through work, military service, self-study, or other experience-for possible award of college credit.

How it works

The student identifies areas of prior learning and submits a portfolio or requests an evaluation. Faculty or trained assessors compare the evidence with course learning outcomes. If the evidence demonstrates mastery, credit is awarded and posted. The registrar applies the credit toward the degree audit, respecting any caps on non-institutional credit. The student pays an assessment fee rather than full tuition for the credited course.

Example: a student with ten years of supervisory experience submits a portfolio aligned to a management course’s outcomes. Faculty award 3 credits. The credits appear on the transcript as PLA credit and count toward the major, but they do not count toward the institution’s 30-credit residency requirement.

How it differs

Credit by examination uses a standardized or departmental test rather than a portfolio of experience. Transfer credit comes from another accredited institution. Competency-based education awards credit for mastery demonstrated within the program’s own assessments, not for prior external experience.

Common errors

Expecting PLA credit to satisfy residency requirements. Assuming every work experience automatically equates to a specific course. Including PLA credits in the enrollment status used for Title IV disbursement in the award term.
