Less-than-half-time is enrollment below the half-time threshold, commonly fewer than 6 undergraduate credits in a term.
How it works
The registrar records the credit load. The aid office prorates any Pell Grant to the less-than-half-time percentage and cancels or returns loan funds if the student is no longer eligible. NSLDS is updated. Loan servicers act on the reported status to end deferments. The student continues to earn academic credit, but aid and repayment consequences follow the intensity rules.
Example: a student enrolls in a single 3-credit online course. The student is less-than-half-time, receives a small prorated Pell Grant, and cannot receive a Direct Loan disbursement. Any prior loans enter or continue toward repayment.
How it differs
Half-time (6+ credits) restores loan eligibility and deferment. Full-time and three-quarter-time produce higher Pell amounts. Non-degree or audit enrollment may generate even fewer aid options. Less-than-half-time is still degree-seeking enrollment if the student is matriculated.
Common errors
Awarding Direct Loans to less-than-half-time students. Forgetting to prorate Pell Grants. Assuming less-than-half-time students are ineligible for all federal aid.
