Glossary/Half-time

Half-time

Half-time is the enrollment intensity of at least half of a full-time load, commonly 6 semester credits for undergraduates.

How it works

The aid office and registrar monitor credit load. A student enrolled in 6 or more undergraduate credits is at least half-time. Loan disbursements and deferments continue. If the student drops to 5 credits, the institution reports the change. The servicer ends the in-school deferment and begins the grace period. Pell proration also changes if the student crosses intensity bands.

Example: a student receiving a Direct Loan drops from 6 to 3 credits mid-term. The institution reports the less-than-half-time status. The loan servicer places the loan into grace status, and no further loan disbursements are made for that enrollment.

How it differs

Full-time is typically 12 credits. Three-quarter-time is 9–11. Less-than-half-time is fewer than 6 and still permits limited Pell eligibility but not loans. Academic half-time definitions for other purposes may differ slightly by institution.

Common errors

Assuming a student with 5 credits can still receive Direct Loans. Failing to report a drop below half-time to NSLDS promptly. Treating half-time as sufficient for full-time-only benefits such as certain institutional grants or visa status.
