More than 160,000 people enrolled worldwide; roughly 20,000 completed it. The course used video lectures, auto-graded assignments, and discussion forums.

The scale of participation exceeded any prior free university course and received extensive media coverage. Thrun subsequently left Stanford to found Udacity. Within months Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller founded Coursera, and MIT and Harvard announced edX. The episode is widely treated as the start of the high-profile MOOC period.

The course demonstrated that free, open university-level instruction could attract six-figure enrollments and directly catalyzed the creation of the major MOOC platforms.

The main goal of the course is to equip you with the tools to tackle new AI problems you might encounter in life.

Some of Stanford's best AI lectures are available online for free.

Peter Norvig and Sebastian Thrun originally taught at Stanford in 2011.
