Thrun had previously worked on autonomous vehicles at Stanford and Google. The 2011 AI course is widely regarded as the catalyst for the high-profile “xMOOC” wave. Udacity initially offered free computer-science courses and later shifted toward paid nanodegrees and industry partnerships. Thrun has been a prominent public critic of traditional higher-education structures and an advocate for skills-focused online credentials.

The 2011 Stanford AI course Thrun co-taught demonstrated massive unmet demand for free university-level content and directly spawned one of the three major early MOOC platforms.
