Provisional independent status is a temporary FAFSA designation that allows a student who indicates unusual circumstances to submit the application without parent data while the institution reviews a dependency-override request.
How it works
On the FAFSA the student indicates that unusual circumstances prevent inclusion of parent information and is allowed to submit without it. The application is processed with a provisional independent flag. The institution contacts the student, collects documentation, and makes the dependency-override decision. Aid is packaged only after the decision. NSLDS and the aid system are updated accordingly.
Example: a student submits the FAFSA with provisional independent status and an estimated SAI of 0. The institution reviews the documentation, grants the dependency override, and packages a full Pell Grant. Had the override been denied, the estimated SAI would have been discarded and parent data required.
How it differs
A completed dependency override is a final professional-judgment decision. Automatic independent status requires no review. Provisional independent status is only an application-stage accommodation that still requires institutional action.
Common errors
Packaging and disbursing final aid based solely on provisional status before the override decision. Assuming provisional status guarantees an override will be approved. Treating provisional status as valid at a second institution without a new review.
