Glossary/Prerequisite

Prerequisite

Prerequisite is a course, test score, or other requirement that must be completed before a student is permitted to enroll in a subsequent course.

How it works

The catalog lists prerequisites for each course. During registration the system checks the student’s record. If the prerequisite is missing, registration is blocked unless an override is granted by the department. Overrides are documented and may be conditional. Once the prerequisite is completed or waived, the student may enroll.

Example: an online accounting course requires completion of a principles course with a grade of C or higher. A transfer student’s equivalent course is evaluated and accepted, satisfying the prerequisite. Another student who has not completed the principles course is prevented from registering until the requirement is met or an override is approved.

How it differs

A corequisite must be taken at the same time. A recommended course is advisory, not mandatory. A placement test determines entry-level course assignment but is not itself a prerequisite course. Program admission requirements are separate from course-level prerequisites.

Common errors

Assuming a waiver will be granted automatically. Treating a course in progress as already satisfying a prerequisite for the next term. Expecting every transfer course with a similar title to meet the prerequisite without formal evaluation.
