Learning management system is the software platform an institution uses to deliver course content, track student activity, host discussions, collect assignments, and record grades for online and hybrid courses.
How it works
A course section is created in the system for each term. The instructor uploads or links materials, creates assessment items, and configures discussion forums. Students complete work inside the system; timestamps and activity logs are stored. Reports can show which students have not logged in or submitted work, supporting the monitoring component of regular interaction requirements.
Example: an institution uses its learning management system for a fully online accounting course. Weekly modules unlock on Mondays. Students submit problem sets by Friday; the instructor grades them inside the system and posts feedback. A participation report flags three students who have not logged in for ten days, prompting an instructor message. The system records the activity that documents both content delivery and interaction.
How it differs
A content repository or simple website can host materials but usually lacks integrated tracking, assessment, and gradebook functions. Video conferencing tools handle synchronous sessions but are not full learning management systems. The system is a tool; the course design determines modality and compliance.
Common errors
Assuming that hosting a course in a learning management system automatically makes it distance education or satisfies regular and substantive interaction. Treating the system’s automated messages as sufficient instructor interaction. Selecting a platform without checking whether it can produce the activity reports needed for monitoring.
