Glossary/Clock hour

Clock hour

Clock hour is a unit of instructional time consisting of a 50- to 60-minute class, lecture, recitation, or faculty-supervised laboratory or shop session within a 60-minute period.

How it is measured

One clock hour equals 50–60 minutes of supervised instruction or documented academic engagement. Full-time status for clock-hour programs is typically 24 or more clock hours per week. Program length is expressed in total clock hours (for example, 900 clock hours for a certificate).

Example: a medical-assisting certificate requires 900 clock hours. Students attend or engage in documented activities 24 hours per week. Under distance-education rules, asynchronous modules count toward the 900 hours only when the platform records the time spent and the activities meet the engagement definition.

How it differs

A credit hour is a unit that combines instructional time with expected out-of-class work and is the dominant measure for degree programs. Contact hour is often used interchangeably with clock hour in scheduling contexts. In distance education the monitoring and documentation requirements for asynchronous clock hours are stricter than for traditional seat time.

Common errors

Counting unmonitored time spent reading materials as clock hours in an asynchronous program. Applying credit-hour full-time thresholds (12 credits) to a clock-hour program. Ignoring state or accreditor caps on the percentage of a clock-hour program that may be delivered at a distance.
