University of Maryland Global Campus
The University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) is a public university with a long history of distance and online education, known above all for serving military and adult learners.
Originally known as the University of Maryland University College (UMUC), it was founded in 1947, before web-based learning or the modern concept of online degrees existed. It began as the University of Maryland's program for special and part-time students, and from its earliest years it had a distinctive mission: to extend university education to people who could not attend a traditional residential campus on a full-time schedule.
UMGC's founding moment was tied to the aftermath of World War II. In 1947 it was established as part of the University of Maryland, initially named for its role in offering evening and extension classes to working adults and to the military. The university's outreach to the armed services became a defining feature. Because the U.S. military stationed personnel around the country and around the world, UMUC built a system of course delivery that traveled with them, holding classes at military installations, posting instruction, and eventually putting courses on television and, later, the internet.
This history made UMGC a pioneer of distance education in the United States. For decades it operated as one of the largest providers of off-campus higher education, moving early into whatever delivery technology was available. When web-based learning matured, UMUC became one of the first major universities to build a fully online curriculum and one of the largest online institutions in the country, with hundreds of thousands of students over time. Its online degree and certificate programs grew to span associate, bachelor's, and master's levels, marketed to working adults who needed to study without leaving home or jobs.
The university later completed a rebranding as the University of Maryland Global Campus. The new name signaled both its membership in the University System of Maryland and its global footprint, one built on more than seventy years of serving distance students on multiple continents. The university is accredited regionally, and its corporate and professional programs are a significant share of its enrollment.
UMGC's place in the history of online higher education is central rather than peripheral. It is frequently cited as one of the world's largest online universities and as a model for public institutions serving adult and military populations. Its emphasis on the military community, from its founding after World War II through its modern cooperation with the Department of Defense, made it the standard example of an institution organized around the needs of deployed and transient learners. At the same time, its evolution from extension classes to a global digital campus shows the full arc of a century's distance education transitions, from mailed lessons to web-based coursework, within a single institution. For students seeking online undergraduate or graduate degrees or certificates, UMGC remains one of the most prominent public choices in the country.
