Liberty University Online

Liberty University Online is the distance learning division of Liberty University, a private Christian nonprofit university, and it has grown into one of the largest online providers in the United States.

The division has enrolled tens of thousands of online students and ranks consistently among the biggest sources of online degrees in the country. Its scale made Liberty an important case in the study of how faith-based institutions built mass online enrollments.

The university itself traces its founding to 1971, when the Reverend Jerry Falwell set out to build a Christian university in Lynchburg, Virginia. In the same year the school was founded, Liberty pioneered a distance learning program, launching what is now known as Liberty University Online Programs. Distance education was therefore not an afterthought added to a mature campus; it was present from the university's earliest days, a fact that set Liberty apart from many other institutions that entered online learning much later.

That early start proved decisive. As internet access spread and the market for online degrees expanded, Liberty's existing investment in distance delivery gave it a running start, and its online division grew far beyond its campus enrollment. By 2007 the university had also established the Liberty University Online Academy, a K-through-12 online school, extending the same distance learning approach to school-aged children. The university's identity as a Christian institution shaped its online offerings, which presented its academic programs within an evangelical framework and attracted students across the country seeking a faith-aligned education.

The scale of the operation attracted attention. In 2020, Liberty University announced that its online programs had reached 100,000 students enrolled, a milestone that confirmed its position among the United States' largest online universities. Enrolling students at that volume required industrial-scale admissions, recruitment, and support operations, and it made Liberty one of the defining examples of the mega-online universities that emerged in the twenty-first century. Unlike many large online operations, Liberty stood out for its explicitly religious mission and its integration of online study with a distinctive social and cultural identity.

Liberty University Online holds an important place in the history of online higher education for a simple reason: it showed that a religious institution with roots in televised ministry could become a dominant force in online degrees. Its success demonstrated that the online format could serve highly dispersed student populations united by shared values rather than by geography. Paired with its founding-era bet on distance learning, that growth makes Liberty a case study in longevity and scale, an institution whose online ambitions dated to its creation and whose enrollment figures placed it among the largest of America's digital campuses.

The size of the operation carried practical consequences for every part of the university. Enrolling one hundred thousand online students required an enrollment and advising apparatus measured not in offices but in call centers, chat systems, and automated workflows, and it made Liberty one of the employers of choice in Lynchburg as the physical campus grew to match its digital one. The online division became, in effect, the financial engine of the university, funding the residential campus that gave Liberty its symbolic center. That dynamic, in which online revenue sustains the brick-and-mortar institution, is a familiar pattern among the mega-online universities, but Liberty's religious identity gave it an additional dimension. The school's mission rhetoric presented online study not merely as convenience but as outreach, a continuation of the Falwell project of spreading its message beyond the congregation in Lynchburg. Whether measured by enrollment, by the number of degree programs offered, or by sheer continuity from the distance learning effort begun in 1971, Liberty University Online stands among the most ambitious online undertakings in American higher education, a flagship of both the faith-based and the large-scale strands of the online degree movement.
