Sperling was born in rural Missouri, overcame a difficult childhood and learning challenges, and eventually earned a doctorate from the University of Cambridge. He taught at San Jose State University and was active in faculty union organizing. In the early 1970s he developed adult-education programs and, after resistance from traditional institutions in California, moved operations to Arizona. In 1976 he founded the University of Phoenix with a small initial class; the university received Higher Learning Commission accreditation in 1978.
The early model used evening classes, small groups, and instructors who often worked in the fields they taught. Sperling rejected the idea that higher education should primarily serve traditional-age residential students. In 1989 the university began offering online courses, using early dial-up and computer-conferencing tools. The parent company, Apollo Education Group, went public in 1994, fueling rapid expansion. At its peak the University of Phoenix enrolled hundreds of thousands of students and became synonymous with large-scale online degree delivery for working adults.
Sperling remained a polarizing figure. Supporters credit him with expanding access; critics pointed to marketing practices, student outcomes, and the commercial model. He died in 2014 at age 93.
Sperling demonstrated that a for-profit institution focused on adult learners could achieve regional accreditation, scale nationally, and treat online delivery as a core rather than peripheral activity. His model influenced later online growth across both for-profit and nonprofit sectors.
